TOKYO, Jun 7 (PRIME) -- Japan considers its participation in Russia’s shelf energy project Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 to be crucial in terms of the energy security and does not plan to leave them, the state’s Energy Ministry said in a White Energy Paper report on Tuesday.
“Japan that has relatively vulnerable energy supply structure imports from Russia 3.6% of oil and 8.8% of liquefied natural gas (LNG), and the Sakhalin-1 and the Sakhalin-2 projects, which cover the supplies, are very important for Japan,” the ministry said.
“If Japan leaves the projects, its interests will be transferred to Russia or to a third state, which may do harm to Japan’s energy security… Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida has stated that he plans to continue the country’s participation in the Sakhalin-1 and the Sakhalin-2 projects in the long term,” the ministry said.
